The First Part Last – Angela Johnson

This novel tells the story of a young father struggling to raise an infant. Bobby is sixteen and though his parents support , they refuse to take over the child-care duties, so he struggles to balance parenting, school, and friends who don’t comprehend his new role.  Alternating between “then,” when Nia told him on his sixteenth birthday that he was going to be a father, and “now,” as he struggles to raise his daughter alone, we witness Bobby coming to grips with responsibility as he struggles to do the right thing.

This is an absolutely amazing book.  I couldn’t put it down once I started reading. Johnson does a great job revealing the struggle all single parents face, especially teen parents, while also making sure her characters were REAL, not just stereotypes to fill in the storyline.  HIGHLY recommended.  – Jessica, Teen Librarian
